Veronica McGee
Alabama TASH President
Birmingham, AL
I live in Birmingham, Alabama. My husband Steve and I have four children. Our middle son Kyle, was born with a rare form of congenital hydrocephalus. Kyle uses ACC and gestures to communicate and is also a power chair user. Kyle is working towards CIE with his employment team at his unpaid internship with Ascension Healthcare. Kyle joined Ascension when he was 15. Kyle and I advocate for systems change in our state to help people with the most significant disabilities have access to CIE. Currently, we are also working with a housing coalition that we put together to develop an affordable, inclusive and accessible housing community in Birmingham. I would love to talk with other disability-forward visionaries that are working on predevelopment housing communities. I work for PeopleFirst of Alabama as a project manager for our IDD Community Waiver Program that was launched 10/1/2021. PeopleFirst will be providing two services for this waiver - Peer Specialists and Family Navigators. I am currently a cohort for the 2021-2022 class of Partners in PolicyMaking in Alabama.
I am a member of Applied Self-Direction and participate on their advisory council.
I have attended three in-person TASH conferences and Kyle and I have presented at one. This will be my second virtual! We look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new friends!
